Membership Tiers
Tiers are the membership levels you offer your community, like “Member,” “Supporter,” or “Lifetime.” Each tier has its own price, features, and settings. Members pick a tier when they join.
You’ll need at least one tier before anyone can sign up. See Getting Started if you haven’t set up your community yet.
Create a tier
- Go to Tiers in the sidebar.
- Click New Tier.
- Fill in the tier details (see the fields table below).
- Click Create Tier.
You’ll land on the tier’s detail page. If you want members to pay online, you’ll need to connect a Stripe price next. See Set tier pricing below.
Tier form fields
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Name | What members see when choosing a tier (required) |
| Description | A short summary shown on the membership page |
| Price | Enter the amount in cents (e.g., 5000 for $50.00). Enter 0 for a free tier. |
| Billing cycle | Monthly, yearly, or lifetime (one-time) |
| Setup fee | An optional one-time charge collected at signup |
| Trial period | Number of free days before billing starts |
| Currency | USD, EUR, GBP, or CAD |
| Features | Key/value pairs shown to members (e.g., “Events: Unlimited”) |
| Active | Uncheck to hide the tier and stop new signups |
| Featured | Marks the tier as popular or recommended |
| Requires approval | New memberships need your manual approval before they activate |
| Display priority | Controls the order tiers appear. Lower numbers show first. |
Note: Lifetime tiers don’t connect to Stripe because they’re a one-time charge, not a subscription. You’ll collect payment separately or mark it manually. See Payments for options.
Set tier pricing
For monthly and yearly tiers, Somiti connects to Stripe to collect payments automatically. Here’s how it works:
- Create your tier and save it.
- On the tier’s detail page, click Create Stripe Price.
- Somiti creates a matching price in your Stripe account.
Members can pay by card once the Stripe price is connected. If you haven’t set up Stripe yet, go to Settings > Payments first. See Payments for the full setup steps.
Change a tier’s price
If you change the price on an existing tier, Somiti creates a new Stripe price automatically. Existing members keep paying the old price until you migrate them.
To move existing members to the new price:
- Go to the tier’s detail page.
- In the Stripe Integration panel, click Migrate Subscriptions.
- Confirm. Members on that tier get an email notifying them of the price change.
Warning: Migrating subscriptions updates the billing amount for all active members on that tier immediately. Check with your members before doing this.
Edit a tier
- Go to Tiers.
- Click the pencil icon next to the tier, or open the tier and click Edit.
- Make your changes.
- Click Update Tier.
To change the display order, update the Display priority number. Tiers with lower numbers appear first on the membership page.
Delete or archive a tier
Archiving is the safer option. It hides the tier and stops new signups without touching existing members.
To archive a tier:
- Open the tier and click Edit.
- Uncheck Active.
- Click Update Tier.
Existing members on that tier keep their membership. You can re-check Active any time to bring it back.
Deleting a tier removes it permanently along with all memberships associated with it.
Warning: Deleting a tier removes all memberships on that tier. Members lose their membership status and payment history. Archive instead if you’re unsure.
To delete:
- Open the tier’s detail page.
- Click Delete Tier at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Confirm in the dialog.
Before deleting, check the tier’s active member count on its detail page. If any members are still on it, archive first and reach out to them. See Memberships for how to move members to a different tier.
